Steinar Gregertsen is one of my Norwegian buddies.  He is a stellar studio musician from Norway who has recently fallen in love with the lap steel.  Steinar is a class act all-around!

Chris Brokaw is a very talented guy...No doubt about it.  His solo stuff is great, but one must conjecture that he also must be super easy to work with given the insanely long list of sideman roles he has juggled.   He has been full or part-time contributing member of the following: CODEINE, COME, COBRA VERDE, MANTA RAY, LOOG, STEVE WYNN, PULLMAN, THE NEW YEAR, THALIA ZEDEK, Consonant, THE WILLARD GRANT CONSPIRACY, ROSA CHANCE WELL and MOLASSES.

Oh yeah...Chris even did a couple records with G.G. Allin and survived.

Voodoo Court is a high energy nuclear surf band for the new millenium with an essence of the old surf sound, rooted in Central CA.    A power trio, featuring Mark Kuhn,  the band delivers enough reverb to be heard from L.A. all the way to Miami.

I had the opportunity recently to meet and hang out in the studio with Rock and Roll Legend, Sylvain Sylvain of the New York Dolls the last time he was in Hamilton.  Heck, I even sold him a TV yellow Tokai Les Paul Jr. which he ended up using on the session and the rest of his tour.  He was the coolest, most down to earth guy and it was an extraordinary pleasure to meet him. definitely, try to catch him on tour.

Without the Dolls, there really would never have been Punk rock, which would have been a very bad thing.  As far as I am concerned, Syl and the Dolls should be inducted into the rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Doc Hopper were a fantastic Punk band.  Singer/guitarist/all-around excellent guy Chris "Gobo" Pierce has been in tons of other cool bands including the AG's (Drums), Sinkhole (Drums), Dead Guy and No Way Narc.  Also, check out Chris'  Technical Ecstasy recording studio in New Jersey or you can try his Myspace site here. 

Chris' latest thing is THE GROUCHO MARXISTS.  I don't know what else to say other than buy some of his stuff!!!  I have never heard anything that Chris has been involved in that didn't rock entirely!!!!

Formed in 2000 by Mike Abalienation and Shannon Suicide as a D.O.A cover band (hence the name...the Murder Squad after D.O.A's hockey team).  Decided to go heavier with their originals.  With their feet firmly set in thrash and grind, Mike being the (ex) lead throat and founding member of N.Y's ABALIENATION and BLOODSUCKING FREAKS and Shan's love of thrash metal they play what they know best...heavy and extreme music.  Rounding out the band on guitar is ROB...the chaos master himself.  Shredding,brutal and loud!! on bass, Wounded Paw (Spazmz,ULCER,Spotty Botty) has a history all his own and he also runs SOUND FOUNDATION studio and WOUNDED PAW records.

Justin Meldal-Johnsen

Gosh...where to begin.  Can you say Diverse?!?!?! Justin has played in many interesting acts.  Certainly, Beck is likely the most notable, but he has worked with many other great acts including Elastic PureJoy with Dave Allen (Gang of Four's original and amazing Bass Player) and Medicine.

Justin has recorded with Marianne Faithful, Frank Black, The Mars Volta, Sean Lennon, Mark Eitzel, Pete Yorn, Ladytron, Turin Brakes, and many others. In addition, Justin co-wrote and recorded an album forthcoming from Macy Gray. He has also contributed to remixes for David Bowie, Moby, and Jamiroquai, to name a few.

More recently, Justin has embarked on his own band project, IMA Robot.

The Mofos are a high energy surf instrumental group. Their style is a mix between Link Wray and Motorhead.  If that isn't enough for you to bolt out the door to find their CD, you likely need your gulliver examined.

Describe Baby Ray?  Imagine if XTC were born in Boston.  Given how much I love XTC and tonnes of Boston Bands, I consider that statement a serious compliment.  I hate to categorize bands, but Baby Ray have the Songwriting chops and super harmonies to live up to a lofty comparison such as that.  Ken also plays with the Weisstronauts

Montreal's Treblemakers were a stellar Surf band.  Fast & loud, They displayed none of the happy-happy joy-joy melodies that were common in other bands of the genre (and that is a good thing!).  Also, Zak is a really cool guy.

Pete Weiss, owner of Verdant Studio has been helping artists make unique records since 1989. Weiss' eclectic knowledge of many types of music, organic approach to sound and performance, and his easygoing demeanor have created a high demand for his production and engineering talents with artists from around the world.

Narrowly Described as "The Ventures on rocket fuel", The Weisstronauts are much, much more.  People of every calling in life regardless of age, creed, sex and musical preference will find something enjoyable on a Weisstronauts CD (Can you tell I really like them?).  Go buy one!

Not every psychobilly band is British, the Danish band, Nekromantix bring along a new and different psychobilly style. The music is best described in terms like "Elvis meets the Wolfman", add punk attitude and spice it up with a universe of monster movies lyrics.  Fun?  Indeed, Just Check out that Coffin Bass.

Check out Jamie Oakes website and then order one of his solo CD's!  Tom Cochrane, Holly Cole, Marc Jordan, Amy Sky and Rob Lamothe regularly call upon this multi-talented artist to fill out their own sounds while exposing Oakes' gifts across Canada, in Europe and as far away as Japan.

Yamaha Canada has also acknowledged Oakes' considerable abilities by inviting him to join Randy Bachman, Rik Emmett and Jason McCoy among others as one of only a handful of guitarists nation wide to be officially endorsed by the legendary company.

The Terminal Sunglasses were part of the Montreal punk/new wave/alternative music scene from 1983 to 1985. Labelled an "avant-garage" band, they updated 60's garage band influences and Velvet Underground avant-guard tendencies with 1980's punk sensibilities.  I spent alot of time listening to their crazy and incredibly fun record "Wrap Around Cool".  The Site has free high quality MP3 downloads of all their stuff! Dig the cool threads also!!!

Alone and by themselves the members of "Trio Chroch" - the name comes from the first two letters of each of the musicians first names - are nice young men, who have chosen to be in the business of music. In 2001, Dan Walsh was enlisted by Fred Eaglesmith to play Baritone guitar, Dobro, and Lap Steel in the Flying Squirrels.  He tours extensively throughout North America and Europe with Fred and his band performing approximately 250 shows per year.  He is a also a great guy!

 Brian Pincombe plays guitar for Rachel Derry.  Brian is a veteran soundman and musician from the Hamilton area and a real nice guy.

Rachel has just completed her new CD, medusa - if you haven't heard her before, visit here to get a sense of her sound and who she is.  Her music, inspired by everyone from Kate Bush to Mozart, is filled with elegance and lyricism and is layered with a strong groove, mature melodies and rich vocal harmonies.

If you've never seen the band before, and you happen to walk in while they are setting up, you might suspect Mr. Opporknockity is anything but a rock band.  With accordions, a washboard, harmonicas, jingle bells, and featuring Troy Roark (pictured above) on guitars out the ying-yang, you might conjure up other ideas about this group. . .
    Bluegrass band?  Possibly.
    Polka Band?  Well, maybe.
    Stick around for a few tunes and you realize that this is a rock band with a twist.  Sure, they have some definite country influence, but what is coming off of that stage is some seriously fun rock & roll.

Junior Achiever is Gene Champagne's new band.  Champagne co-founded Warner Recording Artists’ the Killjoys.  Joining Champagne in Junior Achiever is like-minded musician Dave Fritz. Fritz once fronted another poptastic Hamilton group, Trigger, CFNY 1999 Modern Music Search finalists.

A Northern Ontario music scene staple since 1997, Elephant Band has released two full-length CDs, "Autobus" (June 1998) and "Lessons in Songwriting (April 2002), as well as a CD single "The London EP" (December 2001).

Elephant Band consists of Patrick Rhéal (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Eric Soini (drums, vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Vincent Therrien (vocals, bass, guitar). Patrick Rhéal and Vincent Therrien have been writing and performing music together since the early 90's, and Eric Soini, a welcomed addition to the band, joined in 1996.

Yawning Man was born in the middle 80´s.  Current members are: Alfredo Hernandez - drums (Across the River, Sort of Quartet, Kyuss, founding member of Queens of the Stone Age, Family Butcher, co-founder of Che and member of Desert Sessions); Mario Lalli - bass (Fatso Jetson, Orquesta del Desierto, Across the River, The Sort of Quartet) and Gary Arce - guitars (The Sort of Quartet, Oddio Gasser, Ten East).

YAWNING MAN was the band that John Garcia (Kyuss, Hermano) and Brant Bjork used to see rehearsing when they were teenagers.  In his own words, B.Bjork said about YAWNING MAN that they are the best live band he has seen ever.  Needless to say how important the YAWNING MAN´s music has been in order to understand the desert rock music scene since the middle 80´s.  YAWNING MAN was responsible for influencing music in the desert and creating a sound which today is still trying to be duplicated.

Since Fourth Floor Collapse formed in Perth in 1998 they have become the most awarded unsigned band in Australia, winning many Western Australian Music Industry Awards, and having also taken out the Next Big Thing Competition.

Fourth Floor Collapse is an intensely captivating live band. Vocalist Michael Miller mesmerises the crowd with soaring passion and delicate spine-tingling subtleties. Creative arrangements and beautiful songwriting draws the crowd in further with rare drama and intensity creating a live performance that is simply exciting and mind-numbingly spellbinding.

Fourth Floor Collapse have regularly toured around Australia, and have supported bands such as Badly Drawn Boy, Teenage Fanclub, Turin Brakes, the Avalanches, You Am I, Jebediah, The Blackeyed Susans, Big Heavy Stuff, John Butler, Epicure, The Anyones, iOTA, Eskimo Joe, Superjesus, Shihad, Magic Dirt and The Sleepy Jackson. They have also played several festivals including the Big Day Out 2004.

Growing up in the small country-sea town of Madison CT, LazerLloyd spent a lot of time in the woods and by the water. There are certain musical styles that fit in well with these surroundings. Folk, Blues, Country... Early influences were Neil Young, Willy Nelson, Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughn...

Rude Mood is Don Brown and Jamie Trollinger sharing guitar duties, Randy Powell on bass, and Keith Hamlin behind the drum kit. They're the kind of Blues band that plays the festival/club/party circuit, and gets asked back often.

For the past ten years, they've been gigging around western NC, drawing those crowds who appreciate the way the band combines it's musical virtuosity with a sense of fun on stage. And hardcore blues fans also appreciate how Rude Mood digs deep and reels off a whole string of obscure gems, not just the usual handful of well-known Rhythm & Blues standards.

From their first LP in 1973, to their powerful stage presence today, the Marshall Tucker Band has played countless concert venues around the world. With the success of the Volunteer Jam Tour, and 1999 release of Gospel, the good ol’ boys from Spartanburg, South Carolina remain as a powerful force in the world of music.

When Stuart Swanlund joined MTB in 1985 his slide guitar work added a new dimension to the band – on newer material as well as standards like Searchin’ For a Rainbow and Fire on the Mountain.  Stuart also plays for the Tone Generators.

A thirty year veteran of the Canadian music scene , John Findlay has worked with numerous
pop - blues & jazz luminaries including: Matt “Guitar” Murphy , Marc Jordan, Katrina and the Waves,
Carlos Del Junco, Colin Linden, Georgie Fame, Snooky Prior, Sylvia Tyson, Cindy Church
and Richard Carpenter.

As a singer/songwriter/guitarist and pianist John has two CDs releases under his name and is currently working on a third- an effervescent mix of blues-R&B and jazz.

Musically, Tim Bertulli isn’t afraid to mix things up, skillfully combining the sounds of John Hiatt, James Taylor, and Dicky Betts with the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Satriani, he creates a sound that is as encompassing as it is simple and honest. This purposefully stands in stark contrast to today’s popular music, which is anathema to the songwriter.

Aureole Studios

Here we have an Artist of a different kind to the usual ones listed here.  Arnie McBay has a body of work that includes Drawings, sculptures and all manner of Art.  Check out his site here.

Arnie also plays a mean guitar and is entirely addicted to guitar effects gadgetry just like the rest of us :-)

He plays guitar in sQuat.  You can catch them live occasionally in the Niagara area.

Out of the ashes of the highly regarded Saddletramps, Loomer guitarist Brian Duguay along with the rest of the crew performed their first show in a sold-out performance at the now lamented and semi-legendary Ted's Wrecking Yard early in 2000.  Since then they have gone on to perform their electrified, twang-soaked, harmony-rich rock ‘n' roll for audiences throughout Canada and the US, including appearances at the Burlington Sound of Music Festival, the Americanarama Festival in New York and NXNE.

NON FINIRe mai was born from the ashes of premier Yugoslavian thrash metal band EPIDEMIC ZONE. The band existed from 1987 to 1991 and released two tapes and one 7" EP single, TOUCH AGAINST NORMALITY. They performed with bands like MOTORHEAD, SACRED REICH, ATHROPY, S.N.F.U., and numerous other local and international acts. After several changes in the lineup the original EPIDEMIC ZONE members, Ales (guitar) and Tomi (bass), invited Primoz (drums) and Milos (vocals) to join NON FINIRe mai. In 1992, the band achieved great popularity in the underground scene.

Three years after releasing debut album Pilotinstaller, Slovenian extraordinary Ales Uratnik a.k.a. NON FINIRe mai, produced a new masterpiece entitled "Katzenjammer". Knock Knock Ginger is an indie-pop band from Waterloo, Ontario. Member-wise, the band is Andy the Mëtler, who plays the bass and theremin, Matt Charters, who plays guitar and trumpet, Melissa Djurakov, who plays the piano, Milosz Sikora, who sings and plays guitar and Owen Cherry, who plays drums.

The band’s sound has been described as "experimental," but they can’t quite figure out why. They’d like you to think they play melodic pop songs with a lyrical slant.

Knock Knock Ginger occasionally steps out from underneath houses to play shows around their hometown and Southern Ontario. They have a lot of fun playing live and hope to make it to new and exciting places in 2006.

The Aimless Blades are a six piece Band with a capital B. The songs' color palette range from acoustic ballads to moody swamp-noir to electric rockers and are inhabited by characters that would be at home in a Jim Thompson or Raymond Chandler novel.

Comparisons have been drawn to the Byrds, the Velvet Underground, Dream Syndicate, Giant Sand, Gram Parsons, Green on Red and the Mekons. Close your eyes and you'll see visions of long abandoned stretches of highways or late nights in the desert and maybe a campfire of two.

The Aimless Blades have played support for the likes of the Silos, Continental Drifters and Paul K.

Their live performances focus on exploring and expanding on the boundaries of these genres within each song's structure.  This attention to their live shows earned them the runner-up position in the Kitchener Waterloo Record's reader's choice award for band of the year.

   plays original compositions and covers ranging from Cyndi Lauper to the Foo Fighters. It’s hard to describe their style because there are so many influences being thrown into mix. Marco comes from the early hardcore days. Jay leans toward the classic rock. Sean loves the grungy/alternative sound, Igor (pictured left) digs classic and heavy stuff (and has a serious pedalboard rig!) and Andrew indulges in punk/rockabilly. Now imagine all these influences boiled down to a simmer and then thrown on an open flame!

Black Pudding

Black Pudding have been playing since 1999, originally forming out of the demise of Formula 44 with Rock Hardman (Ape Management, Ogden Steers) & Maria Crequer (Sowpuss), and continuing on as a two-piece. After the release of a cass-album, Blood Clot, in 2000, and a number of well received gigs, Black Pudding disappeared from the stage for a period until they were revived through invitation to play what is now deemed as a legendary gig at the Cross with The Bloody Souls and Xanadu, late 2002. Busy with other projects separately, the pair have also been rhythm-section for Brother Love's Free Association, and Rock Hardman's Ogden Steers.

The Void are the latest incarnation of Dannie Vallely and Ulric Kennedy who began making music together in their late teens.

Ulric and Dannie have appeared in a number of guises through the years including The Mixers (of whom I was a huge fan of in my teens!!!!!), The Golden Dawn, The Fauves, Jenny & The Cat Club, The Catalysts and DHK and their back catalogue includes releases on Sarah Records, Felicite Singles Club and Invicta Hi-Fi to name but a few.

The Void's sound draws heavily on their formative influences - melodic POP shot through with psychedelic colours and transcendent harmonies.

Currently a studio-based project, plans are afoot to develop a multi-media spectacular capable of bringing The Void sound to audiences around the world in the near future.

The end result was heralded as "one of the most brutalizing pop records since Husker Du's 'Zen Arcade'".

Yellow Wood is an independent rock band from Canada's forgotten city, Windsor, Ontario. Their music is about the struggles and tensions of life, capturing all of the associated emotions in both sound and lyrics. It is music inspired by failure that can catapult you to victory.

The most common "sounds like" comparisons are to UK bands like Coldplay, U2, Travis, and sometimes Radiohead. In the live setting, you might hear The Mars Volta added to the list, thanks to some interesting pedal manipulations.

Originally from Waterdown, Ryan Ferguson inauspiciously began recording as Electroluminescent back in 1998. As part of an international bedroom community sprouting from easier access to audience and recording, Ferguson began his musical career as simply a self–serving creative outlet that has now matured alongside the technology that helped originally produce it.

In live performance, he plays guitar, keyboard, and drum pads, often all at the same time, layering the sounds with sampling and delay effects to create mesmerizing, 40-minute long epics that shift and change through rocking, rhythmic passages, to ambient explorations, to distorted feedback freak outs.

Silverstein formed in Burlington, Ontario, on the outskirts of Toronto in 2000.  Emerging from the thriving hardcore scene of their hometown, the band began honing their sound, and recording whenever possible. Two EPs followed and a former member of Grade began talking the band up to his friends at Victory Records. The band signed with Victory shortly afterward. They released "When Broken Is Easily Fixed" which went on to sell over 200,000 copies worldwide, earning the band a spot in Alternative Press' 100 Bands You Need To Know in the spring of 2005. Non-stop touring followed and Silverstein became one of the most talked about bands on the hardcore/emo scene.

The guys in the band are super people and they dig alot of great music.  Shane just dropped the latest CD by and it is excellent.

During the last twenty or so years, the Flaming Lips have released eleven albums.  I can honestly say that each one has been remarkably interesting.  Certainly, some have been more accessible than others :-) , but IMHO these fellows have never just phoned it in.    Often weird, even bizarre, but always worthwhile.  Every release has been an exciting listen.  Really think about just how few bands, that have released more than a few records, can actually claim this.

My personal favourite material was done after the arrival of drummer, Steven Drozd, who has been described as the musical brains behind the band given that he plays most of the instruments on the records.

Analysis of Bison Kills are the band formerly known as Tear Gas and Plate Glass. Formed in 2001, the core duo of brothers Matthew and Nathan Dick released their debut self titled demo to positive reviews in the underground metal press. Backed by a drum machine, the two piece carved out oppressive slabs of sludge doom in the vein of British greats such as Electric Wizard, Iron Monkey and Godflesh.

    With their 2nd release (“The Sea Stranded Whipjack”) the band’s sound has progressed beyond their roots, delivering everything from cerebral busy riffing to slow motion doom dirges tinged with electronic experimentation.

I had the pleasure of corresponding with one of my favourite artists recently.  Television Personalities are quite possibly the finest cult band in the UK. Since forming in 1977, they have released an endless assortment of records involving numerous changes in personnel centred around songwriter Dan Treacy.

As a youngster, I worshipped 60's bands of all sorts esp. Pop-Art freakbeat bands like the Action, the Creation, the Birds etc. Considering the garbage AOR and disco that dominated the airwaves in the mid 70's, there was really not many options.

When I found the first TVP's record, I felt like I had found a band of Kindred spirits that had the same tastes as I did. The first record sounded like Syd Barrett-Era Floyd and Maximum R&B era Who to my young ears. I followed the band for years.

After a lengthy hiatus, the TVP's returned in 2004. The Band has been revived and includes founding members Dan Treacy and Ed Ball.

You might be surprised just how many large artists list the Dan and TVP's as influences. You can purchase the new the record here at Elefant Records.

Worshiping at the altars of Aerosmith, Hanoi Rocks, Smack, and Guns’n’Roses, Trash Gallery has no problem kicking out the Jams in a serious way.  Neen (Vocals and Guitars) has an incredibly strong, rock and roll voice.  Powerful enough to play havoc with most soundmen, I imagine.  The band says it best: "We’ve taken the music back to what it should be loud, raw and energetic. We have guitars, and we aren’t afraid to use them. The fuse is lit and this rock’n’roll powder keg is set to blow."

You really need to check them out live ASAP.

Locas in Love - "one of the most brilliant indie bands in Germany" and about the coolest people around.

The constant members of Locas In Love are Stefanie Schrank, Björn Sonnenberg and Jan Niklas Jansen. They have been joined by different drummers, right now Christian Schneider of Grafzahl plays with the band at home and Sam Lazzara of Brooklyn's finest The Leader in the US.

The name Locas In Love has, naturally, been taken from an Hernandez Bros. Love & Rockets book.

Dan Dunham, bass player for Cursed (also of Shallow North Dakota) popped by recently to pick up some gear and he left me a copy of the band's latest CD. It is an excellent record. If you enjoy some seriously angry, bludgeoning Canadian Hardcore, you really need to pickup a copy of Cursed III here.

Cursed III: Architects Of Troubled Sleep was produced at Toronto's Hallamusic studio, mixed by long time friend and collaborator Donny Cooper, and mastered by Alan Douches at WestWestSide (NJ), with cover art by Baroness' John Dyer Baizley.

The Bradley/McGillivray Blues Band is a group of seasoned pros who've spent the last 8 years blending blues, jazz, Motown and gospel into their own hip, soulful sound. Founded by vocalist Ruth McGillivray and guitarist Sheldon Bradley, this band is not just a collection of players, but a unit that listens, writes, records and performs together. Ruth’s knock-you-flat vocals and Sheldon’s tasty guitar are rounded out by an inventive rhythm section featuring bassist Paul Freeman, and drummer Hoto Parker.

A Thirst for Faith is the creation of Jeff Wesseling (Owner of Road Rage Pro Gear!).  This is Christian experimental/electro/rock with some serious edge.  Very cool stuff and it will appeal to people of all different faiths and beliefs.  I enjoyed it and I am about as Agnostic as one could be.  :-)

The San Francisco four-piece - Scott Evans on guitar/vox, drummer Jeff Fagundes, bassist Ian Miller, and guitarist Jason Pace - are like one giant rhythm section, pummeling listeners with drop-tuned impunity. Originally from River John, Nova Scotia, Katherine started her career as a Celtic Traditional singer and song writer at a young age. Through the years her appreciation of all genres of music began to shine through as her Folk music started evolving into Jazz, R&B, and Pop.

Katherine has just finished recording her first solo album, Journals after winning $25,000 in a singer/songwriter competition put on by GROOVEFM out of Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2007. 

The new album features some tasty guitar work from Carl Strempler.
